Music Therapy Makes a Difference. The mission of the American Music Therapy Association is to advance public awareness of the benefits of music therapy and increase access to quality music therapy services in a rapidly changing world.

The Australian Music Therapy Association Inc. was founded in 1975 as the sole Australian organisation for the profession of music therapy. It is a member of the World Federation of Music Therapy and the Music Council of Australia. AMTA Inc. has State Branches, Interest Groups and representatives throughout Australia. It offers support and professional development for Registered Music Therapists, and general membership to anyone with an interest in music therapy.

The British Society for Music Therapy was founded in 1958 by Juliette Alvin and her colleagues under the name of 'Society for Music Therapy and Remedial Music' with the object of promoting the use and development of music therapy.  This is still, in 2004, our aim.  The BSMT is a Registered Charity, Number 260837.

The World Federation of Music Therapy, Incorporated (WFMT) is the only international organization dedicated to the development and promotion of music therapy world wide and was established at the 5th World Congress of Music Therapy in Genoa Italy, in 1985.

The Nordoff-Robbins approach to creative music therapy is based upon the belief that there is an inborn musicality residing in every human being that can be activated in the service of personal growth and development. This self-actualizing potential is most effectively awakened through the use of improvisational music in which the individual's innate creativity is used to overcome emotional, physical, and cognitive difficulties. In this form of co-creative endeavor, clients take an active role in creating music together with their therapists on a variety of standard and specialized instruments. Because instruments can be chosen which are expressively gratifying yet do not require special skills to play, no prior experience or training in music is required of clients.

The Music Centre, built in the southern Bosnian town of Mostar, is an entirely new kind of institution. It aims to harness the healing power of music, by creating a multi-purpose environment in which children may benefit from the education, practice and enjoyment of music. It is a means of escape for those still trapped in war, for even if the physical destruction has ceased, the emotional conflict remains.

Music therapy is the skillful use of music and musical elements by an accredited music therapist to promote, maintain, and restore mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual health. Music has nonverbal, creative, structural, and emotional qualities. These are used in the therapeutic relationship to facilitate contact, interaction, self-awareness, learning, self-expression, communication, and personal development.
